Escape to quite times, comfort and history in Natchez, Mississippi. Come to The Devereaux Shields House Bed and Breakfast in Natchez, one of the Queen Ann Victorian homes in a city filled with architectural magnificence. The Devereaux Shields House is an elegant two-story home set on exquisitely manicured gardens covered with Natchez crepe myrtles and camellias.
The Devereaux Shields House, on the National Historic Register for significant homes, is a small Queen Ann Victorian Inn featuring two beautifully appointed suite/rooms and surrounded by carefully manicured gardens. The home was built by Ms. Devereaux Shields in 1893 and cared for over the years by only a few owners.
Our property includes Aunt Clara's Cottage that provides three spacious rooms in a charming 1870's Victorian with heart pine floors, large veranda, and ample sitting areas. There is also a reading room. Aunt Clara's is located just a couple doors from the main Devereaux Shields House.
Our homes are just a few blocks from the 200-foot-high Natchez Bluffs, which offers a stunning view of the Mississippi River for several miles in both directions. Enjoy dramatic sunsets across the western horizon and Louisiana lowlands; watch paddle wheel tour boats while listening to their magical calliopes; relax with the slow pace of the huge tows and barges as they navigate the currents of the river.
Ms. Devereaux Shields built this charming Queen Ann Victorian-style home in 1893. The Theodore Crothers family owned the home from 1900-1949, while the David Junkin family owned the home from 1949-1995. James Pippin restored the home to its early elegance from 1995-2004. The home stands across the street from Chatawa Cottage, built in 1900 by John Periander Walworth and his wife Marion Alice (Lela) Gordon, and the Walworth family home, The Burn, built in 1836 by John’s grandfather. The current owners of the Devereaux Shields House and Aunt Clara’s Cottage are Ronald and Eleanor Fry.
The Devereaux Shields House Bed and Breakfast is quietly located on the north side of the Natchez, MS historic district. Guests are surrounded with style and comfort, which includes a classic southern plantation style breakfast at 8:30 AM.
Children over 10 and well-mannered pets are welcome.
We encourage you to visit Natchez and stay with us to share what we love about our homes and community.
